Packing for Study Abroad
(The Real Version, Not the Aesthetic One)

Mine currently looks like two coats on my floor at midnight.

Every "what I'm packing for my year abroad" video looks the same — a bed covered in perfectly folded neutrals, a labeled toiletry bag, someone holding a passport like it's a prop. Mine currently looks like two coats on my floor at midnight and a bank letter I've reread four times to make sure the account details are formatted right.

The paperwork is the part that actually keeps me up. Not the clothes — the visa documents, the proof of funds, the letter from the bank confirming the account is blocked for the right window. One typo in the wrong field and the whole timeline shifts. I've started keeping everything in two places, physical and digital, because I don't trust myself to only have one copy of anything that matters this much.

guessing at a place I haven't lived in yet

I know I'm packing for a Poitiers I haven't actually lived in yet, which means I'm guessing at weather I've only seen in forecasts, not felt. I'll probably pack for a winter that's milder than I think and a September that's colder than I think, and I won't actually know until I'm there shivering in the wrong coat.

The thing I keep catching myself doing is packing for the feeling more than the trip — something that just smells like my room, not because I need it, but because I already know what I'll be missing before I've even left. No amount of planning fixes that part. It's not on any list.

If you want the lighter version of this same decision-paralysis, we built a game for exactly that a while back — deciding what makes the cut before you're actually standing over a suitcase. Real packing isn't nearly as fun, but at least I've had practice.
